HOW TO FIND A GOOD HOME INSPECTOR IN CONNECTICUT

  • States have varying requirements for licensing home inspectors. In Connecticut all Home Inspectors need to be licensed and all interns and trainees need to be supervised by a licensed inspector. Check with the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection to see which companies are licensed and insured.

  • You can also check state websites and the Better Business Bureau for any complaints regarding a specific inspection company.

  • Experience matters. The longer a company or individual inspector has been in business the better. Angie's List recommends hiring an inspector who has performed a minimum of 1000 inspections and has at least 5 years of experience.

  • The length of the inspection matters. Generally a three hour + inspection is more thorough than a 90 minute inspection. Check for industry affiliations, normally a good sign that an inspector is qualified (ASHIInterNachi, NAHI, etc.)

  • Consider hiring an independent home inspector (someone not recommended by your Realtor) to avoid any possible conflict of interest.

  • Ask your friends and family for references. Check an inspector's references before hiring.

  • Go online to check reviews (Angie's ListYelpGoogleBing).
