Having your well water tested for contaminants is of utmost importance as it directly affects your health and well-being. The quality of groundwater, which is the source of well water, can be severely impacted by environmental factors such as soil erosion, chemical spills, and agricultural activities. Such activities can introduce harmful contaminants such as pesticides, nitrates, bacteria, and heavy metals into the water, leading to adverse health effects such as gastrointestinal illnesses, neurological disorders, and even cancer. Regular testing of well water helps identify the presence of contaminants and allows you to take necessary steps to address them, such as treating the water or finding an alternative source of water.

Furthermore, well water testing is essential to ensure that your drinking water is in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for safe drinking water. The EPA has set a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for various contaminants present in drinking water to safeguard public health. Testing your well water ensures that it meets the MCL and is safe to consume. If the test results reveal high levels of contaminants that exceed the MCL, you will need to take appropriate measures to treat the water to make it safe for consumption.

In addition, testing your well water helps detect problems early, allowing you to take corrective action before the situation worsens. For instance, if bacteria are detected in your well water it could be an indication that the well is not properly constructed or maintained. Taking immediate action to repair the well or disinfect the water can prevent a full-blown contamination event that could have harmful effects on your health and the environment. Regular testing also provides a baseline for future comparisons and helps track changes in water quality over time.

Finally, well water testing is crucial for protecting the environment. Contaminants present in the water not only affect human health but also have adverse effects on the ecosystem, such as killing aquatic life and contaminating soil. By regularly testing your well water, you can help ensure that you are not contributing to environmental degradation and that you are doing your part to protect the planet.

Regular testing of well water is crucial for safeguarding your health, complying with EPA standards, detecting problems early, and protecting the environment. It is recommended that well owners test their water at least once a year or more frequently if there are specific concerns or changes in water quality. Well water should be tested for contaminates BEFORE purchasing a home.

Allied Home Inspections LLC can take water samples and provide water testing for the following:
  • Bacteria in water (potability)
  • Basic Water Profile (bacteria, color, odor, turbidity, sulfates, nitrates, pH, chloride, sodium, iron, manganese)
  • State of Connecticut Recommended Profile
  • Radon in Water
  • Lead
  • Arsenic
  • Uranium
  • Volatile Organic Compounds
  • Pesticides and Herbicides

The National Ground Water Association recommends that owners of private water wells in Connecticut and NY get their water tested annually for the presence of coliform bacteria, nitrates, and anything else of local concern as part of a yearly  well maintenance checkup. Contact your local health department for information on local water quality issues.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency also recommends that homeowners and renters check their water for radon.  According to the EPA, a domestic well needs to be tested once for radon during the lifetime of the well.

Total Coliform Bacteria may indicate presence of disease causing organisms. When coliform bacteria are present, this is a good indication that the source of the water may have been contaminated by surface water or fecal material, and may contain disease-producing organisms.

Other typical additional tests are those for iron, manganese, water hardness, sulfides, and other water constituents that cause problems with plumbing, staining, water appearance, and odor. Changes in these constituents also may indicate changes in your well or local ground water. Additional tests may be recommended if water appears cloudy or oily, if bacterial growth is visible on fixtures, or if water treatment devices are not working as they should.

Get your water tested anytime there is a change in taste, odor or appearance, or anytime the system is serviced. Testing after servicing should include the coliform bacteria test, or when family members experience reoccurring health problems. Wells that are new or part of a farming operation should be tested annually especially for coliforms and pesticides being used in the area. Testing is also recommended after flooding or nearby chemical spills or contamination.

We can provide water testing and analysis for most towns in Connecticut including Danbury, Bethel, Brookfield, Newtown, Ridgefield, New Milford, New Fairfield, and Wilton. Please call for pricing and availability.
