Home Inspector Internships in Connecticut
Before you can become a licensed home inspector in Connecticut you need to meet certain guidelines as a home inspector intern
The State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) regulates home inspection licensing. Candidates must meet the following criteria to obtain a home inspector license:
- Have a high school diploma.
- Successfully complete an approved training course (40 hours).
- Have a supervisor / mentor who is a licensed Connecticut home inspector.
- Obtain a Connecticut Home Inspector Intern permit.
- Perform no less than 100 inspections under the supervision of your mentor.
- Maintain a log of your 100 inspections.
- Pass a written exam.
I'd like to offer the following advice to intern candidates...
- Ask licensed inspectors about doing a "ride-along" before you start the process of applying for a permit. You'll get an opportunity to see how things work before investing any time or money.
- You may have more luck finding a supervisor or someone to do a "ride-along" with who is NOT in your town or immediate area.
- Find a supervisor before taking your class.
- Consider obtaining both errors and omissions (E&O) and general liability insurance during your training. Personally I wouldn't train someone who was not insured.
- Join at least one home inspection organization (Connecticut Association of Home Inspectors, NACHI, ASHI, and the like). They'll provide ongoing training and support.
