Connecticut and NY ground water tapped by private water wells is often of the highest quality. Water from Connecticut and NY wells should be tested regularly, however, to ensure that the well is maintained in good working order and the quality of the water being produced continues to meet health standards. Well water should be tested for contaminates before purchasing a home.
Allied Home Inspections can take water samples in Connecticut CT and NY. We provide water testing for the following:
-

The National Ground Water Association recommends that owners of private water wells in Connecticut and NY get their water tested annually for the presence of coliform bacteria, nitrates, and anything else of local concern as part of an annual well maintenance checkup. Contact your water well contractor, state department of natural resources, or local health department for information on local water quality issues. You can also learn more about wells and drinking water by visiting the Water Systems Council website.
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency also recommends that homeowners and renters check their water for radon. According to the EPA, a domestic well needs to be tested once for radon during the lifetime of the well.
Total Coliform Bacteria may indicate presence of disease causing organisms. When coliform bacteria are present, this is a good indication that the source of the water may have been contaminated by surface water or fecal material, and may contain disease-producing organisms.
If you get your water from a municipal utility ("city water") quality can change daily so most tests are usually unnecessary. Nevertheless, it may be a good idea to test for lead because lead can leach into the water from old lead-based plumbing or soldering.
Other typical additional tests are those for iron, manganese, water hardness, sulfides, and other water constituents that cause problems with plumbing, staining, water appearance, and odor. Changes in these constituents also may indicate changes in your well or local ground water. Additional tests may be recommended if water appears cloudy or oily, if bacterial growth is visible on fixtures, or if water treatment devices are not working as they should.
Get your water tested anytime there is a change in taste, odor or appearance, or anytime the system is serviced. Testing after servicing should include the coliform bacteria test, or when family members experience reoccurring health problems. Wells that are new or part of a farming operation should be tested annually especially for coliforms and pesticides being used in the area. Testing is also recommended after flooding or nearby chemical spills or contamination.
